The top 10 gifts for older adults in your life

The season of giving and receiving is upon us! We have all had to navigate this year in unexpected ways, and I don't know about you, but I want to end 2020 by celebrating all of the beautiful relationships that have gotten me through. This means sharing the love through meaningful gift giving! On the other hand, my "creative brain power" is at about 50% and I am seeking out all of the blog posts, gift guides and online resources I can find to secure gifts for my loved ones.

With that being said, our team has worked together to come up with 10 unique gifts for older adults and their families that will be sure to make them feel loved (and give them purpose and enjoyment throughout isolation!). Gift prices range from FREE to about $100

With features such as voice activation, photo slideshow, the ability to "drop in" via video, stereo speakers, and easy-to-use interface, this is a perfect gift for seniors that would like a home hub system that does it all without being overly complex.

This music box can be preloaded with music, sound files and audiobooks and is simple to use, perfect for individuals with Alzheimer's or dementia.

3. Homemade CD or DVD- FREE!

You don't need anything fancy- grab your phone or tablet and record yourself singing a few songs, or take a video of yourself playing your loved ones' favorite song (...or reading their favorite book, etc.) This is a gift that comes straight from the heart.

4. Noise cancelling headphones- $30+ (prices may vary)

The perfect gift for this time of video calls, especially for those who are hard of hearing.

5. Instruments- harmonica, piano keyboard, ukulele

The best type of gift? One that offers so many possibilities for learning and self-expression. Bonus if you get one for you AND your loved one, and Zoom or FaceTime while trying them out together!

Hallmark offers various holiday storybooks where you get to record your voice reading (or singing) through the pages. This would be a wonderful gift from a child to a grandparent (or vice versa!)

The Minnesota Orchestra will be livestreaming their New Year's Eve concert, but why not make a party at home out of it? This package includes things like champagne flutes, snacks and party favors for a fun evening in.

8. Magazine subscriptions- prices may vary

Think of a topic that peaks the interest of your loved one and find a magazine that relates. Real Simple, National Geographic, or Reminisce are a few ideas.

9. CD's for relaxation- prices may vary

From music for sleep to ocean sounds, there are plenty of wonderful options to support your loved one in relaxation, guided imagery and mindfulness (which is so important for health and wellbeing!)

10. Keynote Keepsake- starting at $150

For those who would like to gift experiences and projects that will last a lifetime, check out our Keynote Keepsake program. We work with you to share your unique stories through media such as music and video.

Happy holidays. We hope this time is filled with peace, rest and rejuvenation.
